Giggles. Smiles. Elegant Laughter. All Are Sweet Ingredients For An Authentic and Joyful Wedding Ceremony…

By Annemarie Juhlian

Stevie & Kelli ~ The Sorrento Hotel

Stevie & Kelli ~ The Sorrento Hotel

You know, it’s funny.  In this work that I do, I’ve found that many people have not had the good fortune of attending a truly fun and enjoyable wedding ceremony.

If you take a peak to the right, you’ll see the fun and joy that was had by all at Stevie and Kelli’s Noon wedding ceremony at Seattle’s Sorrento Hotel.

And here’s is what is true:  it takes time, planning, a little execution and a dash of luck to create, craft and deliver a wedding ceremony that elicits giggles, laughs, tears of joy, moments of “sacred,” and one that carries the precious weight of such an important life transition ritual.
I love working with a couple to create a ceremony that incorporates unique elements and moments.  Yes, there are pieces and themes to a wedding ceremony that “are the same.”  I invite every couple to truly consider what is fun, joyful, unique and inspiring about their love story and to craft a wedding ceremony that truly and authentically celebrates such a gift.

Michael and Lindy (and Wake!) ~ A Family Ceremony With A Touch of Romance, Gratitude, Devotion And A Kid!

By Annemarie Juhlian

lindymichaelzachau4From the moment I met Michael and Lindy, I knew their wedding ceremony would be magical and fun.

I was right.

Michael and Lindy’s ceremony at St. Paul’s Church in Port Gamble, Washington was truly memorable in all ways.  Michael and Lindy have created a beautiful and loving relationship and this was shared with family and friends.

Lindy was to walk down the aisle with her small son, Wake.  Well, at the last moment, Wake had other plans and Lindy was escorted down by Michael’s Father.

Wake wandered around St. Paul’s Church during the ceremony and at one moment, we all turned and waved to him as he was caught peaking at the ceremony from the church balcony.  Moments later, Wake raced down the center church aisle and was caught in a big hug by his parents who were in the middle of their ceremony.

Perfect and magical in all ways.  It’s the imperfect moments during a ceremony that are perfect – if only the wedding magazines and “how to wedding books” got this!

To one of Seattle’s best wedding photographers, Barbie Hull, who captured Wake’s race down the aisle, the photo up right and so much more – thank you, Barbie, for such gorgeous photos!  www.barbiehull.com

What Makes For a Romantic Wedding Ceremony? John and Lorna Croswell Got It Right…

By Annemarie Juhlian

John and Lorna Croswell

John and Lorna Croswell

John and Lorna were married on June 11th in the garden of The Willows Lodge in front of their family and friends.  And their wedding ceremony was pure romance, joy and love.
John’s parents, James and Charlotte, flew in for the event from South Africa and were accompanied by John’s sister and brother-in-law.
John and Lorna worked to create a very romantic ceremony with all of the right touches and a few flourishes.  Lorna was absolutely stunning in her gown and walked down the aisle with a big and beautiful smile on her face.
What makes for a romantic ceremony?  The atmosphere, lighting, “feel of the couple,” and most of all, the sweet and vulnerable moments.  John and Lorna brought their true selves to their ceremony moment and in itself, this is pure romance.
John and Lorna – I wish you a beautiful married life together and wish you every happiness.
My thanks to Seattle photographer Tasha Owen for the beautiful image above – Tasha is one of Seattle’s best when it comes to capturing sweet wedding moments.  Tasha Owen – www.tashaowen.com
And to Jenn Wenman at The Willows Lodge – as always, you ROCK!

Seaplane, Auto, Ferry and May Storm ~ Get Me To Doug & Theresa’s Orcas Island Wedding!

By Annemarie Juhlian

It started out as any other day.  A cloudy day in May.  I was booked on the 5:30 p.m. seaplane to Orcas Island to officiate Doug and Theresa’s intimate evening wedding ceremony.
Doug & Theresa ~ Orcas Island

Doug & Theresa ~ Orcas Island

And on this morning,  the wind and the rain started to get crazy.  A few hours before my planned departure, Kenmore Air cancelled the afternoon flight.
And so, I scrambled.  I officiated Mark and Donna’s wedding at 2:00 p.m. and jumped in my car and drove like crazy to Anacortes.  I was fortunate to just catch the next ferry and I finally made it to Orcas Island – the wind was howling, the electricity was iffy and Doug and Theresa got married!
Photographer James Krall took some amazing photos and he captured the one to the right from the Balcony at the Sweet Outlook Inn in Eastsound.
Doug and Theresa ~ I was going to get there, whether it was seaplane, ferry, auto or a combination!   Your love and devotion to one another and your relationship is everything Oriah Mountain Dreamer talks about in your now favorite poem, The Invitation.

Wacky Weather, A Most Amazing Couple and My Newest “Fave” Kitsap County Photographer!

By Annemarie Juhlian

jeffantoniaholmes2When I showed up at Jeff and Antonia’s wedding ceremony the May sky looked threatening.  When I left the building, I was greeted by brilliant sunshine.  And 30 minutes later, a downpour!

As I shared in Jeff and Antonia’s beautiful wedding day, I was reminded of  what is so true in life:  Spirit laughs when you start making plans!  And in this case, I’m talking about the weather!

As Antonia started her walk down the aisle, I glanced over at Jeff and his face was beaming.  As Antonia made her way to Jeff, she greeted family and friends with many a “hello” and her big and beautiful smile.  Talk about spunk in a wedding gown!  This bride was not only spunky, she was/is a beautiful spitfire!  And Jeff is one lucky guy!

Photographer Catherine Abegg captured this beautiful photo and many others from Jeff and Antonia’s ceremony and wedding day.  I have not worked with Catherine before and after seeing her work on this wedding, I’m a big fan!  Thank you very much, Catherine!

Jeff and Antonia ~ I wish you a beautiful life together.  And I am so happy for your miracle.

3 Unique Ideas For A Remarkable “I Do!” Moment

By Annemarie Juhlian

The dress has been selected. The cake is ordered. The invitations are out. The venue is reserved.

Now, your focus as an engaged couple is working with your Officiant or Minister and creating the “wedding ceremony” portion of your wedding day.

Yikes! Where to begin?

Over the years, I have worked with hundreds of couples from all faiths and traditions on their way to their wedding day. Many people have not been to a joyful, contemporary and uplifting ceremony where the focus is on the couple and their family and friends.

So, as you work with your Minister or Officiant to craft, create and write your ceremony, please remember that you have flexibility to design and orchestrate your ceremony as you wish. This is particularly so if you are working outside of the religious walls of a church or religious tradition.

As a Non-Denominational Wedding Officiant & Minister, I invite you to consider these three possibilities to personalize your wedding ceremony and make it truly your own:

Joyful, Fun and Innovative Ideas For Your Wedding Ceremony:

1) Nix the Unity Candle. The unity candle is a beautiful ritual and it comes from many traditions. AND it is overdone in a wedding ceremony. If you desire the unity candle, kick it up a bit and ask your Officiant or Minister to more deeply personalize this ritual. If you are lighting a unity candle, consider involving your entire wedding party in some way or as you are lighting the candle, invite family and friends to share their wishes for you.

2) Jazz Up Your Ring Exchange. Before you and your Sweetheart exchange your rings, have your Officiant or Minister pass the rings to each member of your wedding party – or perhaps to your immediate family members – and request that they each hold the rings for a moment and send a best wish, prayer or blessing. This way, your wedding rings are sweetly infused with the energy of people who love and appreciate you.

3) Give Your Guests a “Job.” Yes, a job! Before your Minister or Officiant shares the final blessing and pronouncement, have him or her make a brief announcement to guests about “what to do next” immediately after the ceremony. By giving your family and friend direction on photos, cocktail hour or whatever, you are taking care of your guests and making way for an elegant tradition from your ceremony to your reception/party!

Joe, You Are One Lucky Guy! Joe and the Vibrant and Gorgeous Casey at Court In The Square…

By Annemarie Juhlian

joecaseygiovanellikristenhoneycutt4Joe and Casey Giovanelli ~ what can I say, other than “thank you!”

Thank you for giving me the marvelous opportunity to share in your wedding day and celebrate your loving partnership.  Thank you for making me so happy in the moments of your ceremony, knowing we were all there for such a blessed and happy purpose.

Sometimes, in this work that I do, there are no words.  Sometimes, all I can do is say “thank you.”   And of course, sometimes, I call my husband Greg and say, “Honey, you’re not going to believe this!!”

Casey’s dear friend and local photographer extraordinaire, Kristen Honeycutt, was on hand to capture the image above and so many others from this wedding day.

Hans and Sarah’s “Vashon Island” Wedding Day ~ Waterside with Family and Friends…

By Annemarie Juhlian

hanssarahschumakerHans and Sarah couldn’t have planned an Island wedding that was more fun, more comfortable or more memorable.

On a sunny Saturday evening, Hans and Sarah gathered their closest family and friends for a very sweet and personalized wedding ceremony at a private lodge on Vashon Island.

From special words to their parents, to their beautiful wedding vows, to the involvement of family and friends in their ceremony, Hans and Sarah were intentional in crafting a ceremony that truly was about “them” and the tribe of people who love them.

The couple’s two precious dogs were a bit too enthusiastic to be a part of the ceremony and they sent their canine well-wishes none the less from a nearby room (you had to be there!).  Hans and Sarah ~ I wish you a very beautiful life together!

Joy! Joy! Joy! Stevie and Kelli’s Wedding Ceremony & Celebration – The Sorrento Hotel

By Annemarie Juhlian

Stevie & Kelli Stone ~ The Sorrento Hotel ~ April 2010

Stevie & Kelli Stone ~ The Sorrento Hotel ~ April 2010

Stevie and Kelli Stone ~ Congratulations!  Photographer Victor Zerga captured a most spectacular photo of this wonderful couple walking down the aisle after their wedding ceremony at The Sorrento Hotel.

While Stevie and Kelli’s wedding ceremony was contemporary and fun in so many ways, it also contained threads of the sacred and timeless pieces familiar to such a ritual.   And the frosting on the cake?  The great joy among family and friends who joined Stevie and Kelli for their wedding day.

I absolutely loved watching Kelli’s parents, Bob and Linda, and the graciousness in which they interacted with family and friends.   I now fully get where Kelli got not only her beauty and verve, but kindness and grace!  (Stevie, you are one lucky guy!)

Kristin Shea and her staff at The Sorrento Hotel did a spectacular job pulling all pieces of this wedding together.  It is always a delight for me to work at The Sorrento and you’ve got to love that sloooowww elevator!

April 23, 2010 ~ A Spectacular Drive to Leavenworth for Chris and Joey’s Mountain Peak Wedding…

By Annemarie Juhlian

Chris and Joey Garland

Chris and Joey Garland

This past Friday was truly a spectacular day for Chris and Joey Garland. Chris and Joey were married at Snowgrass Lodge among 20+ of their closest family and friends.
Joey’s Mother, Gwen, was missed as she could not make the trip because of health reasons.  Fortunately, friends videotaped the ceremony and celebration to insure that Gwen could share in the highlights of her daughter’s wedding day.
And what a wedding ceremony this was ~ Chris and Joey’s wedding vows were sweet and elegant, there was the throwing of marshmallows (ask the couple for details!), a surprise group reading from Dr. Seuss, the planting of tree seedlings and much more.
Chris and Joey ~ Thank you for trusting me sight unseen with your special moment.  I am so incredibly touched by the two of you as a couple.  You have taken grand risks for love.  You overcame challenges on the road to your wedding day and most of all, you are indeed blessed with a rare and poignant love – true in all ways.
